Corrupt Spells and Shadow Magic
|
48> Is it possible to use Shadow Evocation and Shades to cast, respectively, evocations and conjurations off the corrupt spell list without suffering ability damage? The rationale is that the ability damage is a cost or component of the spell, and shadow magic allows one to dispense with components. Does that rationale apply here?

51) The disciple of Dispater seems quite overpowered. Is this because it's a NPC only PrC?
50) Are all the PrCs specifically restricted to NPCs, and not to be used for (evil) PrCs (as they might be too powerful?)? - Kraah!

BoVD Questions | ||
|
52) p. 135, Juiblex's spell-like abiliites: the blasphemy and unholy aura abilities are listed as at will spell-like powers, but they are also present in the 1/day section. What's the best solution? If I eliminate them from the 1/day, shall I substitue them with other (1/day) powers?
53) maybe it's a bit off topic, but... if I choose to give the archfiends DvR 1 as per the option at p. 123: 53a) Does the +1 divine bonus on attack rolls from the Corruption domain stack with the +1 divine bonus from DvR? 53b) Does the +5 deflection bonus to AC from the Wand of Orcus stack with deflecton bonus form charisma? (I know that normally bonuses of the same type does not stack, but with artifact and divine bonuses involved one can never be sure. In particular the D&DG seems to imply that divine bonuses from DvR stack... but it's not clear if it's always true or only for AC) |

Re: BoVD Questions | ||

Firstly, I don't think that there needs to be any "NPC Only" tag attached when they all have to be quite Evil to the Core to consider and progress in the classes. Only in an Evil campaign would they be a possible PC class, so then the alignment wouldn't matter.
I don't think any of the classess are too overpowered. The "Disciple of Dispater" is one of the best I have seen, but his powers are about equivalent to other classes. His divine bonuses to attack are similar to "Sword and Fist" classes with similar powers. Like the "Fist of Hextor" or the classes that give "Combat Sense" are very much alike. This one still rocks, though. Secondly, about Divine Ranks; I do not think that Divine Bonus stack, I am really not sure, but the Deflection and Natural armor bonuses would not stack with any existing bonuses at all. The bonus from Orcus' wand can be for when he "lends" it to a Mortal. Finally, can Pevishan, or a Moderator keep up with Monte's answers and put them in the first post? I thought that was the point, so this board isn't overflowing with BoVD questions. |

Bonuses of the same type does not stack, unless specifically noted (Dodge Bonuses for example).

54.) Unless I'm complerely missing something, the Entry for the Giant cockroach which you get from the bag, is referenced to Chapter Eight in the book, and in my repeated searches of this chapter, I've found nothing, any chance we'll see the Stat Line for the little guy?

55) the spell called "Soul Shackles" is a much cheaper and lower level way of trapping a soul. Can this spell be used to trap souls as a component? Or can the spell only be used to question the spirit, making it not a true soul trapping spell. Considering that it is a 5th level spell, I can see the latter.

Re: BoVD Questions | ||

Quick question concerning the stats for Mephistopheles. There seems to be a discrepancy between the flavor text and his stat block.
Flavor text reads (pg.162, end of first paragraph) - "As such, he has become immune to cold..." Under "Baatezu Traits" he has the standard fire/poison immunity and 20 acid/cold resistance. I'd assume I'm just reading too much into the flavor text, but it did seem like an odd thing to state while not reflecting it in his stats. |

Vile Energy Drain | ||
|
I hesitate to speak for Monte, but yes, I imagine one could make Enervation or Energy Drain vile, by application of the appropriate feats.
With Enervation it would be less important, since those negative levels go away on their own at the end of the spell's duration. However if you wanted to restore them before that time you'd have to do it in a Consecrate or Hallow effect. With Energy Drain the victim would get the normal saving throws after 24 hours. If they were successful then the affected negative levels would disappear. If someone wanted to restore them before that time, it would have to be done in a Consecrate or Hallow effect. 33. Extraordinary.
34. He must have it on his list. (plus, you saw that there was a spell that allowed you to have a disease but not suffer its effects, right?) 35. I don't know what snacky means. 36. He can add them to his list just like any other cleric spell. 37. Yes. 38. Each time you take it, you can use it on a given spell-like ability five more times each day. 39. Creatures who get substantially tougher always have their CR raised. Because there is no exact benefit, there is no exact mechanic. Plus, a kobold with after the Calling has become a lot tougher overall than a beholder would. 40. Should be 5. 41. Up to the DM (but I'd say most of the time, yes) 42. No, you should assume the spell works like described. 43. It's safe to bet that the Dread Emperor casts spells to increase their hp. 44. The point is that weapon doesn't become permanently magical. In all other ways, it functions as a magic item. 44A. Yes. 44B. I probably wouldn't allow it to change (that's too powerful). Monte

"Corrupt Summons" Spell
|
57) In the Sorcerer/Wizard spell list there is a 4th-level Transmutation spell called "Corrupt Summons." It doesn't seem to appear anywhere else in the book and there is no actual spell entry. Did this spell get cut and the entry in the spell list accidentally left in?
I've looked pretty hard for it. --CT |

Firstly, thanks for the replies.
Quote: Ah, er, no. I just found it odd because soul rot comes from eating outsiders (iirc), and why would you have to do that in order to treat with devils? Seems more like a chaos requirement to me. But you've cleared that up, anyway. Quote: Tasty, powerful, stuffed with goodies. The demonologist seems to get far more bang for his buck than the diabolist. On a related note (call it 35a), when the demonologist gets a quasit, it eats any former familiar for no xp penalty, according to the text. Should the same be assumed for the diabolist getting an imp, although the text makes no such explicit reference? Many thanks for your time, Monte. |

Re: BoVD Questions: | ||

The Demonologist is a great PrC, but it is not more 'snacky' than the Diabolist, which is also a fantastic PrC in my opinion. The familiars would follow the same rules, I guess.
5 59) I am still abit confused about 'Consume Likeness'. You mentioned that I should follow the spell as described, but the creatures equipment presents an issue. Let me see if I have this straight: The caster consumes a pound of flesh of a creature, and can then change into the form of that creature as a standard action. The caster does not change any stats or abilities, apart from the minor affects noted in the spell, a disguise bonus and perhaps wings or gills. However, the problem is it also says that the caster can change into the creature INCLUDING the creature's equipment. How does this work? Does the caster gain any benefit from looking like they have plate mail and a sword? What if the item is seperated from them, in the case of a sword. As the spell is not an illusion, the item cannot dissapear, but it also does not say that it is a transmutation, only a necromancy. So perhaps you are actually 'wearing' the body of the victim, but how does the equipment figure into it? It would be a good way to hide items and extra weight. So basically, I think everyone assumes that this spell seems to grant the user a permenant 'Alter Self' effect, but when I asked you this, you said to follow it as printed... which means taking the equipment and all. |

Consume Likeness | ||
|
Here's how I'd handle it: The spell essentially gives appearance but not substance, except for minor things. So you appear to be the consumed being, right down to what he or she was wearing at the time you consumed the flesh. However such items are mere costuming, and do not possess any unusual or magical properties. And all go away if you take damage or change to another form (including your own form).
Otherwise you'd just have eat the posessor of an artifact to duplicate that artifact, and that would just be silly. --Paul |
|||

Re: BoVD Questions: | ||
|
I agree completely. No DM would let a PC change into magic items! This is how I would handle it too, I just want to be precise about the effects of the spell.
If a person was touched though, whatever is duplicated in the form should not 'dissappear' or feel wrong, as it does not in alter self. Personally, though, wouldn't it be more helpful NOT to change into the person's clothes as well as skin? If you were going to impersonate someone, you would need to change clothes every once in a while. I guess you could just strip the victim so that the form changed into could then dress in their gear or other clothes. |

My guess is you'd only be able to get the abilities back under the same conditions vile damage would be healed. |
