Re: Great Game Stores | ||

hehehe,
most gamers like myself have a nearly erotic relationship with their gamestore. I love the smell and the excitment of entering a rpg-store. I need my fix. I used to like fantasy encounter in Essen, but that was a way back. One very nice store in the us was in schaumburg near chicago. I don`t recall the name. It was my first visit to the us. My father and I drove through the whole of chicago without a map in the midst of a snowstorm after arriving at the airport. And we found that store by miracle and I bought lots of weird stuff. It was beautiful cheers eed_de |

Re: Great Game Stores | ||

well, mail ordering kills german gamestores. But, well, german gamestores are at least 10-15% more expensive than your friendly mail order dealer. This is bad, but buying about ten books will leave me with 50 bucks more for the same products.

It can't be said enough... the folks at Dragon's Lair are knowledgeable, nice, funny, and have almost everything... what they don't have they'll order. The store is gamer- and geek-friendly, and has lots of cats for petting (except for the gray one who gets stressed out sometimes).

Lost Worlds - Macedon (outside Rochester) NY

Hope I'm not breaking protocol by tooting my own horn...
While I'm not ready to say that Lost Worlds is a great game store - we've only been open for business a bit over three weeks now - I'm hoping we'll be considered that eventually. Not only do we carry games (board, card and RPG), but we have a full line of comics (especially gaming related comics - KoDT, Nodwick, etc.), and a nice selection of used/out-of-print fantasy and science fiction books. I'm a huge fan of all the above mentioned things, and that's one of the main reasons for opening the store - that, and my fiance was getting tired of all the stuff I'd sell at conventions taking over our apartment. We have some space for gaming - about three tables worth; I think the store is clean (I vacuum daily) and well organized; it's well lit; and I think we have a nifty selection of merchandise. |

The Guardtower in Columbus, Ohio

I'm an employee of the Guardtower, so I'm a bit biased on this topic, but I wanted to let people know that if they want to learn more about us, they can check out our new Yahoo site. It was created to make our free monthly e-zine (which I organize with the help of many local contributors) accessible to anyone who is interested. It features game product both newly released and "on the horizon", game reviews, local news, and fiction by local writers as well as art from local artists. I'm pretty proud of it. Check us out!

Guardtower and Sci-Fi City

I'd like to chime in on the Guardtower. Really rather a nice store. Quite large (though not as large as I'm used to, see below), and they stock anything, and will order anything (they ordered the 2nd Edition Earthdawn Companion for me just the other week).
Now, I saw someone mention Enterprise 1701. It's still in Orlando, but now it's called Sci-Fi City, and it's _huge_. It probably has about 2000 square feet or more, and that's just a guess. It has everything I ever cared to know, and most of the employees are totally cool. Really, whenever I'm there it feels like I'm in the Dealer's Room at Origins and GenCon, down to the castle in the middle of the store. Anyway, those are the stores I would recommend to anyone in Columbus, OH or Orlando, FL. Ulthwithian Gamer-at-large |

I frequent The Game Preserve (www.gamepreserve.com). They have locations on the south and north side of Indianapolis (southside location is about 5 minutes from my house), in Bloomington near IU, and in Lafayette (where Purdue is, for you college sports fans). They have gaming rooms, a decent selection of Reaper miniatures, a huge selection of GW miniatures and lotsa games. The website has directions to the stores. I also go to Game Times (game-times.com/aboutus.shtml) in Greenwood, IN (about 10 minutes from my house).
I'm pretty lucky having two game stores within 10 minutes of my home, and another 2 within my city. JediSoth ------------------------------------------------------------------

I used to go to the Game Preserves in Indy when I lived there. Good stores. I think I liked the Greenwood location better when it was in the mall though. It seems cramped in the new locale.
There is another store in Indy in Broad Ripple, but the name escapes me. Boardroom Games, maybe? Anyways, I wouldn't call it a "great" store, but "a" store is better than "no" store, right? Valmiras, Nercomancer [sic] AKA Verrik the Iking, The Demon God's Faen, and the Litorian Prefect The field of arrogance is very competitive. Fortunately, I am better at it than everyone else. |

Although I think that the store was already mentioned, I'm going to add Space Crime Continuum in Northampton MA to my list! After being out of town for 10 years, I stopped back in for a visit. Ironically, the friendly helpful employee who pointed out the copy of Dynasties and Demagogues that a friend of mine recommended was the author himself!
I was really pleased with the front - it's still the same SF store, but they also carry a selection of used books. Used bookstores are drying up faster than puddles under a blast furnace. It's nice to find a store that still has them. Many a happy day I've spent in a used bookstore. The games section in back blew me away. They punched out the wall and expanded. There was a miniatures workshop going on! (Wish I'd known, but see my rant. I was only there on coincidence. Extra rooms for gaming and a second floor. Displays that were tall but all the books were flat so that you saw the cover. (Don't you hate it when the store doesn't have enough space to put the cover art where you can see it?) The minis display was good, but a little smaller than I would have hoped, but Chris does orders, so I'll be getting my AU minis from his place. (He did have CoC minis. Those are hard to find.) It was clean, neat and nicely set up. So I recommend it if you're in town. Oh, and the interior signage was actually helpful - this is better than most major office parks. |

I live in a small town and it's been hard to get stuff, so I started my own store. I deal with gamers in Manhattan, Kansas (Kansas State University), and sell online (I deliver for free in town -- personally).

Odd that I've never noticed this thread before today, but then, I don't usually come to this part of the boards.
I don't have the time or energy to read all the previous posts here, but I will point out some of the game stores I have frequented in several locations in the US. I will begin with Merlin's in Tampa, Florida. It was one of the earliest bookstores that I found to carry RPGs when I was younger. The first gamestore I frequented as a kid went the way of the dodo. I used to buy all sorts of RPGs here. It was small with narrow ailes, but it had what I needed and the service was good. Ah, nostalgia... I haven't been there in a few years now, but I hope to go there soon on my upcoming summer vacation. No game area I'm afraid. At least not then. I don't have a link for them, but here is their address and phone number: Merlin's Books 2568 E Fowler Ave Tampa, FL 33612-6271, (813) 972-1766 Another was Emerald City in Seminole, Florida. I haven't been there in a few years, also. They carried a lot of comics and RPGs, as well as the obligatory card games. I think they ran tournaments at night sometimes. Here is a link. During the couple of years I lived in Orlando, I would go to SciFi City. The size of the place blew my mind at the time. I had never seen such a large game store before (or since, really). They ran all sorts of games there - minis, lan computer games, card games, RPGs - you name it. The ailes were some of the widest I had ever seen, too. (Can you tell I have a thing about ailes?) They carried anything I could think of remotely pertinent to someone with a gaming or scifi-related hobby. Their comic selection was only okay though; they only kept current or recent issues in stock. The main drawback I had there was that my wife never felt comfortable while I would shop there with her and the kids, who were practically babies at the time. The sales people were always too quick to remind her to watch the kids, even though she was already taking care of anything they would get into. We never had that problem anywhere else. Because of that and a couple of other customer service issues I had with certain employees my wife wanted me to boycott them, but they were the best place to go for RPGs in town, and not all of the employees were a problem for me to deal with; a couple were exceptional. Here is a link. There is a store in Fayetteville, North Carolina that I cannot say enough good things about, called the Hobbit. They had any game I could have wanted as well as models. No game area though. However, they shipped me new game material while I was in Afghanistan, no problem. They were life-savers for my RPG fix. Excellent customer service for any gaming soldier. I don't have a website link for them, but here is a phone number and address: 910-864-3155, 6111-A Yadkin Road. Here in Louisville, Kentucky there are three that I go to. I will discuss them in the order I found them. The first is The Great Escape. They carry RPGs, comics, DVDs, CDs, toys, and some other stuff. Their customer service is good. But, they have no place to game at. They put on a lot of special sales and get some VIPs from time to time. Here is a link. The second is Comic Book World. They have very good service and remember me by name. I ran a demo game here that was quite successful. They carry comics and most any RPG, card game, or mini game you could want as well as other miscellaneous game and comic-related items. The only thing I don't like here is that everything is kept in celifane. Here is a link. The third is a new store here that just opened around last December called the Louisville Game Shop. They have a lot of room in the back to play and the customer service is very good. They carry a lot in the way of miniatures, card games, and board games and can order more any time you want. They carry quite a few RPGs and can order more of those as well. The only things I think really need improvement here is more room for parking, though I don't know how to fix that one considering their location, they don't get comics, and that they are closed on Wednesday. However, they are the closest to me here at work and it is the most convenient for me to get to on my lunch hour. I can just stop by to browse through the latest RPG book and come back later when I want to buy it. Here is a link. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm trying to revive this thread ... coming to Seattle tomorrow. Looking for a good place to go. I don't see anything in Downtown Seattle. Seems telling that gaming doesn't seem to lend itself to high rent districts does it!?
I wish there was more money to be made for the industry ... but at the same time it keeps this hobby more as a labour of love than a get-rich-quick-scheme! I've worked at a Gaming Store ... it's hard sometimes to keep a vaguely interested look on your face when the 1,000,000,000th person tells you about their favourite character. I didn't stay working there for my health (I had heat stroke ... was 41C <read: HOT!>), didn't get paid well at all ... but is was something I thought I was born to do ... ie. "Work in a gaming store!" Personally I find hearing about so-and-so's character's exploits interesting ... but when you are subjected to it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over <hands steaming with the effort of trying to convey the repetiveness of the event> ... it gets old! Just reread this thread and realised I actually posted on it myself, back in '02. Luckily for me, the number of game shops in Dublin has increased 100% since then... there are now 2!
The newer one is defiitely my fave. It's located in the basement of a comic store called 'The Other Place' right in the middle of Temple Bar in the city centre (about 25ft from the back door of the Foggy Dew). It's run by Gavin Cassels, a very nice guy and long time gamer (magic player, at least). They carry a good range of D&D, Malhavoc & White Wolf material and if they don't have what I'm looking for, they'll order it. Only small criticism I'd have is that it's a small shop, and is gets crowded pretty quick. |

I have to add Oroboro Games in Redmond. I've never really attached to a game store before like I have with Oroboro. They've been very helpful and are genuinely good people. I've always felt uncomfortable in many of the game stores I've been to. Another game store in redmond that will will not be named has never treated me and my girlfriend well and we've talked to other women who have felt kind of marginalized in there and I've felt that before. We've come to know the owners really well and they are just really good people.
Steve's usually there in the evening and he's the store owner. A really nice guy and knows a lot about games and will give honest opinions. And his wife Rose who used to run the store in the days is amazing. She runs a game for us and she has a game that she has been running a game with young(like 10-15 year old) girls for 2 or 3 years now and she's amazing. It's a smaller store and while they try to get the big things in as soon as they are available, they can't always. But they are always happy to order and have special ordered several times for me. www.oroboro-games.com/ 16505 Redmond Way Suite E Redmond, Wa 98052 Again, I can't say enough about these guys. They are just good people. |

Re: Great Gaming Stores

I just got back from 2 weeks vacation in Florida and visited Sci-Fi City. Enormous store, great selection of stuff (not so much old stuff but heaps of material from the last 5 years or so), plus masses of non-rpg coolness at every turn. Gotta agree with the comments above on the staff - some very very helpful, a couple were Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. My two kids ran around like crazy, though, and no-one batted an eyelid. Good place, all in all.
As for my local store, that would be "Gamers" in St Neots, Cambirdgeshire. A teeny-tiny place with the friendliest, most helpful staff ever. The owner often seems more interested in chatting and shooting the breeze than selling stuff, which makes for long visits. Very nice. The selection on the shelves isn't extensive (he has to stock what will sell, being such a small place) but the owner will order whatever you like. Plus the shop has the coolest second-hand section ever (going right back to material from the early 70s) and you are free to rummage to your heart's content. |

Well I live in laval, thats in the province of Qubec in Canada and I buy my RPG stuff here:
www.magnistudios.com/bdco...ex_eng.htm Jaque the owner of the store is a great guy always willing to order what you need, gives good price and love to roleplay. We got a lot of space to play RPG and we have been playing there for almost 4 years now. In the montreal region you got the valet the coeur and 2 boutique le Donjon but none of them is even close in term of price, friendly service and room to play. |
