I met a lot of great retailers at the GAMA show this week and I thought it might be an interesting feature here to list game stores that you like, and possibly why. Mention names and cities (and even addresses or websites if you can). Your fellow gamers will appreciate the referrals, I think.

I've been going to The Guardtower in Columbus, Ohio for ten years now. It's easily the best game store I've ever been to, and I've visited something like 15 stores in 6 cities. It is large and well-lit, with plenty of chairs for reading an entire book before deciding to buy it. They have plenty of gaming room with beautiful terrain, and will order practically anything someone requests. Really good customers get nice discounts, and most importantly: the people who work there are really great. It's a good place to bring someone who isn't certain about gaming.

While I was in college in Pittsburgh PA, my friends and I were constantly at a comic/gaming store
called Phantom Of The Attic. The owner Jeff is a great guy who would be willing to order most anything for you. There were many a weeks were my friends and I would drop $100-200 a week there. The store has/had a very friendly feeling to it. When you went in there, you didn't feel like you were being watch as to what/when/how fast you were going to buy something. If you took 1 hour to make a selection, it was not a problem. Jeff seemed to understand the gamer's mentality. BD |

Dragon's Lair, Austin, Texas. Greatest comic shop/ anime repository/ game store, IN THE WORLD. This is the store where you can pick up the latest Rurouni Kenshin DVD, grab the newest 3E supplements, find an old back issue of X-men, a couple new Reaper miniatures and some Citadel paints to go with them, an alpha Black Lotus, a plush stuffed Cthulhu, the latest issue of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, the newest Fantasy Flight tabletop game, a few new dice, and what the hell, you can stop for a game of Warhammer before you head home. They have a local gamer's registry behind the counter, they will order anything for you, and they're the nicest people.
I LOVE this store. They rule. They do have a website, at www.dlair.com, I believe, but the site so does NOT do them justice. "Tsuki ga nijimu kagami wo nagareta kokoro, hoshi ga irete koboreta kakusenai namida."

The Game Parlor, in Chantilly, Virginia. This place is big, clean and well-lit. And let me say "clean" again, since in my experience, that's a rarity in game stores. It is well-stocked, and if they don't have it, they'll order it. And usually, if they don't have it, it's because they had a run, not because they don't stock it.
There are about a dozen gaming tables, both large and small, and a walled-off private room you can sign up for to play RPGs. The best thing is about the place are the proprietor and his wife, Rob and Cindy. You can find the Game Parlor online at: www.gameparlor.com/ Tarondor |

If it's the one run by Jeff Yandora, it's on Craig Street in Oakland. It's still there, and still great - the staff is always friendly, and something interesting is almost always going on. |

Quote: Let me second that nomination. I won't reiterate the reasons already given (although I agree with all of them), but I will add that it is very well laid out, making locating products very easy. For in store gaming, it has the numerous large and well lit tables, but it alo has two bathrooms, and they stock sodas and snacks (but don't mind if you bring your own). Some people complain that they shrink wrap everything, but they are more than willing to let you open that up if you want a closer look at a product. All you have to do is ask. |

Another nomination for the Game Parlor in Chantilly, VA.
The store is clean, the sales staff are informed and curteous, and I have had nothing but positive experiences shopping here. ------------------------------

Two nods here, one for Patimes just north of Asheville, NC, and one for Cerebral Hobbies in Chapel Hill, NC. Both for similar reasons, and much the same reasons as everybody else has for their favorite spots. The people working there are always nice, always friendly, willing to let you look around, and more than willing to order anything special for you and hold it when it comes in.
Pastimes has the added bonus of also being a comic book shop, but unfortunately it's a small space and so doesn't have any real table area. T |

yes Dave posted before I could.
Glad to hear that Jeff and Phantom are still there. I have not been in there since I graduated college and left the 'burgh area back in '94. BD |

I'll second the motion for the Guardtower in Columbus. It's always very well stocked, with a special rack near the door for new releases. The owner of the place is very friendly, and his employees are pretty nice, too. The only trouble with it is its location: it's in a strangely rural portion of town. All there is within two blocks of the place are two bars, a topless joint/adult video store, and an old BP station that was turned into a used car lot. But it is worth the trip. (For those who know Columbus: from Riverside Drive/Rte. 33, take Trabue Rd. west. It is on the right hand side after about a mile. If you get to Hague Rd. or Wilson Rd., you've gone too far.) Warning: if you are allergic to cats, you might want to skip this place. The owner of the place has taken in two strays. One is named Squig and the younger, smaller one is Ripper.

Here's my story about good game shops in my podunk Central Illinois town that none of you are likely to come to.
We're a college town, so there are a lot more people in town purchasing things than would be immediately obvious. Within the games community, it means that we can support at least one full-scale games store, and that there are often more than one vying for the title of the best. The best ever (IMO) was Bear Productions, whose owner still sells things out of a warehouse, but doesn't have a storefront where you can browse, which is a bit hit. Roundabout way of saying is: if you're in Champaign, you currently want the Dragon's Table. They have a broad variety of products, minis, fantasy fiction, they share a storefront with a comics store (G-mart Comics) and even have a big room with tables in the back for playing. Well, when you live where I live then the only gaming store in town is the best one.
Dragon's Den Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, CANADA. Phenomenal selection, every game I've heard of and some I haven't and a third of the area of the store dedicated to game tables. Just book a table and it's yours for the night. Very Cool. Clothing, Novels.... The list goes on. And best of all...... they don't mark up the prices of the books beyond the suggested price on the back, a lot of stores in my area do. nick |

Cincinnati, OH has a few gaming stores, but the one I go back to most often is Violet Vortex in Milford. Their selection isn't the greatest, but they'll order anything you want. They have a lot of tables set up for playing, whatever you want. The best thing is their hours of operation. it's literally: "From Noon until the lights go out". Which is sometimes never. I think it stayedopen for 2 or three days straight once. It's not unusual for people to be there gaming at 7 in the morning (I know I've left there at that time at least once... which really pissed off my fiance). They also have their own in store LAN with around 10 PCs for playing all kinds of networked games.

Military Simulations. Although it's a game store (In Melbourne somewhere, I think), my primary experience with it was through mail order when I was living in varius regional parts of Australia. They were always quick with deliveries, and the prices were reasonable (even now, I find stuff cheaper there than I do in most of my local stores), and the catelogue was scarily comprehensive at times.
Just to save everyone time should they suddenly come join those of us stranded in Australia Arwink |

*Sigh.* The best game store around here closed. It was Red Rock Collectibles, in Lexington, KY. There are other stores, but that one was best.
I guess 2nd best (though not even close to Red Rock) is the Rusty Scabbard, although it suffers from fat'n'stinky syndrome. i.e. they have so much in store gaming, the fat'n'stinky guys that seem to live there won't get out of your way to let you shop. VERY FRUSTRATING. Red Rock had a "bathing mandatory" rule... thuvasa3 |

I'm still in Pittsburgh, and Phantom is still here, and still a great place.
There are, however, several stores of the same name in the area. I understand they were once owned by the same person, but are not longer. Consequently: multiple stores, multiple owners, same name. The big gaming one is on South Craig Street in Oakland. There's a comics store of the same name out there, and another comics retailer using that name in Monroeville. The gaming Phantom's website is users.telerama.com/~phantom/intro.html BTW. Chiaroscuro |

Not that there's a lot of gamers in this state, but I can recommend War and Pieces in West Hartford CT as being a good resource. They are very heavy on the model-building, miniatures, etc, but stock a good number of gaming products and do special orders.
