Get the players emotionally involved. The first thing you need to consider is whether your group is RP-intensive, combat-intensive, or something in between. If they are RP-intensive, getting them to hate the bad guys will be a lot easier, because more likely you'll have a lot more hooks to tamper with. The basic idea is to tamper with things the PC's consider important. Some ideas in no particular order: 1. Threaten the druid's animal companion in a way other than pure death. At one point, I had the guards yell out, "Get the tiger, Hedrack wants a new rug!" Oh boy, my wife hated that and to this day absolutely hates Hedrack with a passion, despite the fact that Hedrack is dead. She was actually upset that she was not the one to rip Hedrack to shreds with her own, wildshaped claws and teeth. Other ways to threaten the animal companion is to turn it into a zombie. Druids HATE undead. I never went so far as to do this (because she always took the bodies of her animal companions), but I guarantee you if I did, she would go ballistic. 2. Sunder the fighter's ancestral weapon. Heck, just sunder his favorite weapon. Thrommel can do it. Nothing pisses off a fighter more than when you screw with his weapons. 3. Attack the PC's family(ies). This requires a fair amount of RP, so I wouldn't bother with a non-RP group as they wouldn't react too much. Key point here though is that you don't really need/want to kill them. You want to injure/kidnap them or ruin their livelihoods (burn the farm, etc.). You want to be able to do this again in the next adventure and if you kill all their families, this plot device is lost. 4. Kidnap the wizard/sorcerer's familiar. This is actually not easy, so make sure you have a plan to hide the familiar from a determined spellcaster (things like private sanctum help for scrying and dimensional lock, etc. help for the teleporting rescue attempt). I once had a plan to kidnap Sylvan's viper familiar Ace and baleful polymorph it into a chicken. Heh, never happened though. Hedrack would have followed up with a comment, "This is a more suitable familiar for you, Azzalin." 5. Use sendings. My players call them spam. But, once Hedrack or other clerics get to know the PCs, no reason why they shouldn't communicate with them. Record these on paper, too, so you can read them later. Lots o' fun. This is the best opportunity to taunt the crap out of the PCs. It's especially useful on failed attempts into the Outer Fane. 6. If you have the BoVD, your options increase. Now, you can use false sendings and the choices there are wide and varied. You can also use spells like the moral something or other (forgot the name) that changes your alignment (even if only temporarily). Follow that up with a suggestion and now anything is possible. There are also great torture rules and addictions and stuff. Having Tal addict Verilia was great. She really hated him for that. 7. As you can tell, druids are easy to mess with. Have Hedrack chop down a tree and set it up in the CRM or somewhere the party will see it for sure. Pin a message to it, "For every minion of mine you kill, I chop down ten trees." It also works for Paladins and innocents. 8. Mess with their holy symbols. A little bit of paint will go a long way. Defacing holy symbols and especially places of worship of the party's cleric will cause him to fall off the bandwagon at anger management school.

Valvorik gives us this insight: Air trying to hold its own, go along with others, be accommodating (The Principle of Air ~ resist nothing, allow everything to pass, be everwhere and be ignored, then gather for the tornado). Earth rebuilding having been shattered recently (The Principle of Earth ~ abide and allow others to shatter on you) Fire consolidating and reaching out of the mines with plans and plots (external revenues and sources of servants - one reason it is strong: The Principle of Fire ~ burn and grow powerful on what you destroy, be grand, be bold). Water playing a waiting game (The Principle of Water ~ be present, flow where there is least resistance, wear down slowly, then unleash a fury unopposeable).

Abilities. Str +6, Dex +4, Con +8, Int +6, Wis +4, Cha +6. Special Qualities: The Champion gains resistance 10 against fire, electricity, cold, and acid. Elemental Attacks (Su): Once per turn, the Champion can unleash or maintain one of four elemental attacks as a free action with a DC of 10 + ½ the Champion's HD + Wis mod. Air - A blast of wind in a 120 ft line forces all targets to make a Fort save or be blown away (DMG, Table 3-24). Earth - A great hand erupts from an earth or stone surface within 60 ft of the Champion and grasps at a target in its square for a round, as if the Champion was attempting to grapple it with the Improved Grapple feat. Fire - The Champion shoots a searing hot glob of blue fire as a ranged touch attack, that lowers fire resistance by 2d6 points and then deals 6d6 fire damage (effects that afterwards grant fire resistance to the target do not suffer this reduction). Buffs. If Lareth is warned of the heroes' approach ahead of battle, he reacts by commanding a mephit near and crushing it with death knell. Then he casts the following spells: Spell resistance, true seeing, deathward, greater magic weapon, spell immunity (enervation, dimensional anchor, lightning bolt), magic circle against good, bear's endurance, bull's strength, resist energy (cold), bless, entropic shield, and shield of faith. This process takes less than 2 mins and thus leaves him buffed for at least 10 min. He reaches hp of 176, AC 33/19/28, saves +19/+11/+14, SR 24, and his sword attack becomes +23 (dmg 1d8+12 plus elemental damage). Tactics. Generally, Lareth assigns Dodge to nearest enemy warrior, dispels the most dangerous foe and disables the most mobile one with an elemental attack while keeping his distance. If possible he attempts to force a non-flying foe off a platform with a wind blast or bull rush, and given the chance he Spring Attacks and jumps platform. When low on effective spells he casts divine power and divine favor, then engages the most injured enemy in melee. He does not wield his shield in battle, since he needs a hand free for the Orb. If the Orb is forced from him and all hope seems lost, he retreats with Plane Shift.
