At Myreth's Oddities, Myreth tells Cole the unhappy news that the flask he brought in the previous day was actually cursed. Myreth says he had a hunch it might have been and was prepared, and deliberately tried to set it off. Cole is horrified but Myreth shrugs it off. Myreth refuses to purchase the candles, however, guessing they too might be cursed. Cole doesn't press the issue, feeling guilty. Instead, Cole finally makes good his threat to use all this cash he's been saving, and buys the best Headband of Intellect available in Ptolus.
Cole and Kaia walk the streets of Ptolus, and debate whether they want to retrieve the Sword of Lies or not. They can't come to an agreement, but the tension level stays low.
At noon, they meet separately with Avach and Yuri, the Rogue companion of Kaia's friend and fellow Arcstone (Holy Warrior of Korak). They end up recruiting both of these characters for their quest. Yuri will join the group to replace Therras as he heals (DM Note: Therras will actually be phased out, becoming an NPC contact who stays in the city. He'll have permanently "lost a step" from his brush with death and will give up on the adventuring lifestyle.) Avach, on the other hand, is brought in on a much shorter leash. Cole makes it clear that the party cannot trust him as one of their own, won't pay him for his work, and whatnot. But they have a common goal and so they should work together. Privately, Cole tells the party to always keep someone standing between him and the heavily armed enruned warrior. Kaia takes this obligation very seriously.
After an awkward conversation with Therras where Therras "loans" Yuri his Shining Band (DM Note: The party is named the Shining Band, after some minor magical items created by Cole which have permanent light cast on them and are worn as easily covered armbands), the new party of five heads down into the Banewarrens again.
(DM Note: I intended to have them meet Paladin Sharah Nestor, who would tell them that the Church had officially requested she lead a group to retrieve the Sword, and that she was forming a party that day and would likely be heading down soon. She would instead offer to join the party and avoid endangering her fellow Paladins. But... I forgot. Oops. So I have to decide what happens. I'll probably wing it. Depending on how things go with the party, they might not meet her again before "the end.")
The party crosses over the Antimagic zone and Avach drops to his knees, clutching his head. Everything comes unraveled. They drag him out, but then he goes back in and confronts his memories. His master, a highly ranked member of the Inverted Pyramid from House Sadar, has mentally dominated him. They discuss things, and when he leaves the dead-magic area, he can remember the discussions but the domination is still present. It's difficult, but through trial and error they get the story. Avach says he'd like to stay with the party anyway, as no matter what the motivation, the place needs sealing.
(DM's note: In my story, the Pyramid at-large isn't aware of Avach's master's deception, but the head of the Pyramid, Salmoon Sadar, is. Jevicca is suspicious after the way Avach was talking during the meeting, but didn't bring her suspicions to anyone. It'll be interesting to play this out internally within the Pyramid. I'm seriously considering having the party have a very disruptive influence on the organizations they encounter and having Jevicca "quit" the Pyramid in the story's conclusion [a similar fate may await Reverend Mother Donna Mara, who might seek a new post after being frustrated with Ptolus' politics]. This could be a nice payback to the party after 25+ sessions of frustration at the way the city's various organizations treat them.)
The party arrives at the bottom of the Spire and once again is humbled by the Banemight. They begin the tedious climb upwards, Yuri climbing unaided while Cole flies nearby. Before long, Dukett the Vrock attacks again. He attempts to grapple Yuri but fails; Yuri's four-swing dagger counterattack (coupled with Cole's magical assault) quickly knock the demon out before he can teleport away again. He plummets over a hundred feet to the ground and any lingering life force is snuffed by Kaia's hammer. So ends the "Master of the Baneheart."
They eventually all make it up to the ledge, and investigate Dukett's lair. They are puzzled by the heavily trapped door leading to the vault, and Yuri is even turned to stone before being restored by Ariana's divine magic. They leave that door alone, not really wanting to know what's behind it (yet). They cross the bridge and check the other opened door. They peer in and see in the distance a 12-foot iron statue.
They are sure this is the Golem they have been warned about. They step away from the door. Now what?
Now what indeed. We break the session, and next time all the discussions about "what to do" will finally stop being theory and start being practice.
