IMO, bringing paladins into the discussion is thin ice since they have a specific code of conduct which is outside and beyond the alignment system in terms of strictness. Also, there have been several different takes on paladins as a way to try to open up the restrictiveness of the core code of conduct and provide more interesting options for play. Contradictions between the way 2 paladins might react would be more an issue with nuances between their individual codes of conduct than the D&D alignment system as a whole.
