I'm preparing for my upcoming Sunday slugfest, and I just spent the last hour going through the Earth Temple. The PCs have just finished the Battle of the Front Door (see my campaign journal for details), and there's a good chance they'll be heading straight into Earth Temple territory next. I considered what the troglodytes would likely do when faced with a large, determined force such as my eight-player group, and I think I've come up with a nasty scenario.
There's no way the troglodyte guards on Map A (area 13) didn't hear the battle; I know that the text says they won't abandon their post, but I'm thinking they'd at least send one guy to peek just around the corner to see what's happening (the entire battle took place in the four-way intersection, so they could have watched the whole thing). After witnessing the PC's efficient slaughter of the door guards, it also makes sense that one of them would go alert their brethren of the possible incoming threat. So how would the Earth Temple react to a major threat from the south?
My plan: Swordmaster, Greshta, Miikolak and the miscellaneous trog guards will all convene at room 230 and wait. The area 13 guards will do a fighting retreat - turning into a convincing rout - that will take them through areas 232 and 230, then making their stand with the manticore in room 224. The others will be listening for a signal from those retreating guards, at which point Miikolak will cast silence on one of Swordmaster's javelins and the entire posse will quickly move into room 231 to hide. Greshta will drink one of her invisibility potions and step outside the silenced area to listen for the eventual sounds of combat from 224. As soon as she hears the fight start, the entire group will charge north and catch the intruders from behind. As soon as they enter, Swordmaster will throw the silenced javelin at a convenient spellcaster. (Betty'd better watch out!)
Unless the PCs are extremely careful or lucky, they'll
find themselves in a major pickle. I can't wait!
