But why use the 3.5 version? The dread osyluths don't need to be like their more evolved descendants. Using the 3.0 versions (with certain adjustments for things like DR) is perfectly reasonable. The dread osyluths are an offshoot of the normal osyluth and there's no reason they should be like their modern kin at all. This way the DM can comfortably use them in the scenario as outlined.
I wish I'd thought of this when I ran my group through the Banewarrens. The dread osyluths could be the Outer Vaults' version of the Malignant Wraith - by which I mean, something that keeps popping up to plague and harass the PCs every time they truck through that area of the Banewarrens. I love the malignant wraith (especially once it figures out its no longer stuck in its vault). The dread osyluths could be that same kind of malicious fun for the DM.
Plus (and this is pure concentrated Evil), the dread osyluths are smart. Making deals with the likes of Navanna Vlaadam would be right up their (and her) alley.
