PHB2 Classes and AE |
Lead | |
|
I know Monte designed AE to work well with standard D&D classes. The rogue is a good example of a class that easily drops into his campaign. Has anyone
used PHB2 classes in AE? I honestly haven't even looked in a PHB2 so I don't know what's in there. Is it worth even looking at?

The Beguiler is one of my favourite non-core base classes. Basically a bard sans music. I don't see anything in particular that would be an issue.
The Dragon Shaman fits pretty well, I think. You may have to tweka the Totem Dragon aspects since there is not the chromatic/metallic dichotomy in AE. The Duskblade I like in DND, but in AE I think it overlaps with the mageblade (or runeblade). The Knight is the only PHBII class I don't really like. I think a Champion is a much better interpretation. If you want to add the chivalric aspect, I think I would do that with RP instead of rules. YMMV.

Sounds good. I'll have to take a peek inside. None of my players take standard DND classes but they are good for NPCs

I like the 3.5 PHB2 in general, but I am unconvinced that most of the classes would work well in AE, unless you are using the rule that AE and D&D
casters are "separate but equal" (D&D casters use D&D spells and feats, AE casters use AE spells and feats, and never shall the two meet).
I also feel that each of these classes is so tightly focused on a given niche that converting them to AE style casting would be doing both systems a
disservice.

Re: Duskblade vs Mageblade. I don't mind having two classes that do pretty much the same thing. If one does it better (and I've never really looked
at the Duskblade, although friends of mine have played them), the other might become more of an NPC class but that's not a bad thing.
Full disclosure, though, my current game is AE/3.5 mix. I use a modified version of the "separate but equal" which I might as well call almost-separate and almost-equal. 3.5 and AE casters are restricted to their own spell lists (although they can use Unique Spell to get a spell normally forbidden to them), and feats are unrestricted. I'd like to report that their are no balance issues with this method, because I haven't come across any, but I am forced to admit that it might simply be because my players are less interested in breaking the system than they are making characters they enjoy playing. |

Has anyone used the beguiler in AE? And how did it work?
