Since I am the DM, I got to pick the setting. I wanted something different then the FR, something that allowed me more personal input so I decided upon my own version on the Birthright setting. I have run a campaign in Cerilia before, in fact, it was the first campaign with this group, and I really like the world. Instead of spending a lot of time on an exact conversion to 4E, I decided to make it a loose one, changing the world to fit 4E and not the otherway around. I don't have the time and energy right now to convert things such as 'blooded' and my players prefer to leave ruling domains alone for the moment anyway, nor did I like limiting the players the choice inherent in 4E. So I kept countries (made the map a bit bigger), cultures and history, but changed the game mechanics behind them. For example, instead of there just being humans, elves and dwarves, I gave each of the human cultures the abilities of a PHB race with mix breeds, and those not too tied to their own cultures as the PHB humans.
- Brecht = half-elf
- Khinasi = genasi
- Masetians = halflings [in my version they are not completely extince, clans wander around on the coasts like seafaring gypsies, some still dreaming of the ancient glory they lost]
- Rjurik = elf
- Vos = orc
Other player races:
- Anuirean = dragonborn (the only human race I actually turned into a different race, the Anuirean culture just fits the dragonborn so well)
- Dwarves = dwarves
- Halfling = shadar-kai (the halflings of Birthright are refugees from Shadow Fell)
- Sidhelien = eladrin
I kept the classes as they are. I am going to keep true wizardry from all except sidhelien and blooded humans - no player wanted to play a non-sidhelien wizard anyway. Everybody can learn to cast arcane spells though by making deals with creatures from Shadow Fell (whether demons, fey or otherworldly powers) or by binding their bodies with the elements. Those spellcasters are called shadow binders, most are warlocks, but in case of NPCs they can be virtually anything (such as a Masetian that had powers remarkably similar to the kobold wyrmpriest).
Since the players wanted to focus on demon hunting, I decided to base the campaign around the corruption of the Shadow Fell and the trouble this is causing in the real world. Demons, fey and undead are all from the Shadow Fell, some more evil than others, but all dangerous to mortals. Actions by mortals can cause the barier between the real world and the Shadow Fell to weaken, causing all kinds of monsters to spontaneously form (a bit like the Umbra, fomori and the like in the Dark World of the Storytell system). The old Anuirean empire created an organization to battle these incursions, Shadow Hunters. With collapse of the empire, much of the power of the Shadow Hunters was lost as well, but it remained in existence, forced to keep a low-profile in many places without the backup of a powerful empire and in the face of its many enemies. The demon princes will be major awnsheighlien, but although the fluff is somewhat different from what the players talked about, they don't mind
In any event, I am going to tackle conversions when needed, or when I have the time.

Lets first get them to level 5...
O well, it forced their hand...
