In a D&D game I'm a player in (Wow... mostly I DM) I'm running a Cleric, and the lack of stylish Monsters to Summon is getting me down. It strikes
me as odd that there aren't generic simple to run Demons, Devils, and Celestials for each spell... instead of the Celestial/Fiendish Zoo options. I
don't want to summon a Celestial Bison. I'm not playing Pokemon here!
I'm hoping to come up with 3-9 generic outsider for each Summon monster spell, that fit the Celestial/Demon/Devil/etc mold. Thus I could be summoning a small angelic creature with even a Summon Monster 1.
I figure the best option (rather then making 9 outsiders for all alignments.. which is a bit much) is to make 4... one for each extreme alignment.
I figure the Demon should be a bestial thing with a random energy damage power (Acid demons, Cold demons, Fire demons, Lightning demons... but you can't pick when you summon them).
I figure the Devils should be something tricky and more humanoid... maybe a sneak attack would fit well.
Lawful Good Archons are defensive sword and shield characters with lots of Light powers.
Chaotic Good Angels are (random again) ranged attacks with bows or holy blasts or such.
These creatures will be simplified in terms of powers and abilities (not having more then a fraction of the powers associated with the Types mentioned)
The result (which I will submit to my DM) will be 36 monsters (well 4 multi-advanced monsters) for use in summon monster spells and as general creatures. Clerics will always have something to summon that isn't a zoo animal. Arcane casters will have something interesting to work with as well, (and will have a better selection). And the DM himself will have a nifty set of monsters for general use.
Ideas?
I figure the 1st level version of the creatures should be 1/2 HD Tiny versions of the monsters. For 2nd and 3rd they should go up 1 size group so that a Summon Monster 3 gets you a Medium sized monster. After that, have them gain nifty powers or gear every even level, and a size every Odd level, so that a Summon Monster 9 gets you Gargantuan monster... massive Demons, titanic angels, etc.
I want them to all apear somewhat humanoid, so that it will be easy to describe them as looking like Dwarf Archons from the dwarf god, or orc-ish demons from the orc god... etc. Also, I think some system for the Lawful ones (which use weapons) to appear with their Deity's favored weapon might be interesting... dwarf archons have hammers... etc. This idea concerns me because some dieties have crapy weapons (daggers), two handed weapons (no shield then) or strange weapons (bows)... so it might be left out.
What do you guys think?
