Question: Does activating a combat rite provoke an attack of opportunity?

Activating a combat rite is a free action and it does not provoke an attack of opportunity (all free actions I can think of do not provoke).

Except spell-like abilities (such as the disciplines in BOXM) that are free actions... But, combat
rites are non-magical.

It says it right by the description of how combat rites work that they don't provoke an attack of opportunity.
Just think of them as a one activated ability every round for no cost besides it's uses per day limit. |

I know Monte said that those did, but IMO, if it requires so little action as to be a free action, there's no way it should provoke an AoO. IMO, anything
less than a move action (free, swift, immediate) should never provoke.

learning that the disciplines (which are free actions that are spell-like abilities) provoke attacks of opportunity. I understand that combat rights are
completely non-magical, but the fact that they are structured like spells started me wondering...
One of my players is playing an oathsworn and he just began using combat rites over the weekend. It worked very nicely.
Thanks, again, for the help.

I'm experimenting with allowing people that are armed with ranged weapons to make attacks of opportunity against anyone that provokes in line of site... It's actually working pretty well. And, it creates interesting attack of opportunity chains for a more fluid battle. Though, I can see why it isn't in the core rules that way.

I just got my book back and looked for the place where it says that they don't provoke attacks of opportunity.
It doesn't say that, but it also doesn't say that they do provoke attacks of opportunity. Since the default is that things don't provoke attacks of opportunity unless they say otherwise I think it's understood that combat rites don't provoke attacks of opportunity. |

Thanks, Zaraky. I appreciate your taking the time to look.
Overall, I like the combat rites very much. I'm seeing the possibility of getting more use out of the Ritual Combat Feat when combining AE classes with some of the things in the BoXM (especially thinking about the extra feats). Our group is new to actually using combat rites, so thank you for taking the time to answer.
