I'm not that familiar with the WOW Scourage, but isn't that just a bunch of Undead that attack and corrupt the world with dark energy?

The Far Realm in 2ed and 3ed was a lifted concept from H P Lovecraft. It was a place beyond time and space where the normal rules of physics, dimensions, etc are different or even non-existent. Creatures of the far realms are often multi-dimensional and completely unlike humans in their intelligence. The physical rules of the realm are so different from normal that even being there (and getting there isn't easy) warps the body and mind. The flow of time there compared to normal reality is chaotic... you could just as easily leave before you entered as get loast for eons.
It was home to the least humanoid and most impossible creatures, most of which were combinations of limbs, tentacles, mouths, eyes, and less pleasant things. Many of them were insane, and/or psionic: brain eaters, mindflayers, and gibbering mouthers. Some of them were near or more powerful then gods, but unlike the gods of 2ed, they had nor needed, nor wanted worshipers (although cults often were devoted to them). They often had very straitforward desires... like devouring the world, ending the existence of all planes, or just wanting to explore a bit by eviscerating things.

The concept is very much HP Lovecraft's outer gods, who wrote of such concepts in the 30s. He and his friends wrote a lot of short stories that include this concept. Various horror and novel writers have been doing so ever sense. Bruce Cordell wrote the Far Realm as a way to bring that kind of content into D&D back in 2ed.

I doubt they lifted any of it from WoW so much as WoW lifted it from the same source as Bruce did.
