This certainly puts the idea of spells critting into perspective. With crits capped at maximum damage, TPK's from a lucky fireball are going to be rare, it seems.
I'm not sure the basic system needed much changing (I'd never heard their complaint about the spiky nature of crits before), but this system's definitely a lot easier for newer players to latch onto (I remember having to get used to confirmation rolls when I started 3E, myself).
It does make criticals a bit less special, though...assuming that the longsword still does 1d8 damage (and I'd be pretty shocked to see it be anything else), that's only an average of +3.5 damage on a crit. Unless base weapon damage scales with level, it's looking like crits won't scale much either.
That wouldn't happen if they make "martial maneuvers" actually replace the standard attack, but I don't see them taking that route for every class.
