Ever since Ovinomancer was first published, I've been making jokes about a deck I would call "Baaaaaa-mageddon" in which I would turn all of my opponent's lands into sheep. I don't know why, I just thought it was funny. Over the years, I've occasionally messed around with what would be required to make such a deck work. I'd even had a little stash of cards in a card box; things I thought I'd need. This has been going on for YEARS (Mirage came out in 1996), and even though I've been a lapsed Magic player for years now, every now and then I'd noodle with it.
Well, my friend Ian came back to town for the holidays, and he wanted to play some Magic. Specifically, Elder Dragon Highlander, which I've now discovered is a pretty fun format. Anyway, we each build decks for that, and I figure "what the hell!" and finally work on a build of Baaaaaa-mageddon.
Aside: If you're wondering, the combo consists of
Fastbond
Concordant Crossroads
Aluren
Nature's Revolt
and Ovinomancer. You can play more than one land a turn (important because Ovinomancer returns lands when he comes into play), creatures can use their abilities when they come into play, creatures with casting cost 3 or less (hello Ovinomancer) can be cast for free, and all lands are 2/2 creatures (and thus a - can be killed by Ovinomancer, and b - gives me a win condition). There's other cards in the deck, naturally, but that's the engine of it.
So, Ian and I get together last night, and I've told him that I finally built it; this gets a good natured chuckle. Both of our lady-friends are there, and we're alternating between Magic (which they good-naturedly watch) and other games that they're interested in playing. Finally, end of the night, he grabs a theme deck and says "ok, I know what you've been waiting to do, go ahead." I grab Baaaaa-mageddon.
Aside #2: If you don't know much about these cards, or Magic in general, let me give you a fill-in - this deck is HORRIBLE. It makes me laugh, but it's a 5 part combo in a color that lacks traditionally-good search, with components that, on their own, are nearly worthless or help my opponent more than me. It is not good. At ALL.Ok, so we play, with Ian going first. My opening hand:
Forest x
Plains (I have white for some enchantment search/protection, lifegain, couple of other small things)
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary only 1 in the deck
Horn of Greed (x2)!
Fastbond
Ok, the Horn of Greed was a late addition to the deck; I only thought of them this last go-'round.
He goes first, plays a land
I go Forest, Fastbond, Forest, Plains
He goes.
I draw and play a Forest. I play Rofellos. I hold off on the Horns of Greed until I draw an other land. (If I was a better player, or had played with the deck more, I would have held back the mostly-useless plains the turn before for just this situation. Live and learn.)
He goes, plays land and a creature.
I draw a forest. Cast both Horns of Greed, play the forest, draw 2...
... 40 or so cards later, that turn, his lands and one creature are all 0/1 sheep tokens and I've got an army of lands. He goes one last time, and I come over for the kill.
We were all laughing so hard our faces were red. It was historic - the only possible way the deck could go off like that and it does, like it's fulfilling some woolly prophecy. I don't think I'll ever play it again.
