Wizard of Oz adventure |

I just finished watching the Wizard of Oz with my daughter for the eight millionth time and it occurred to me that it would be interesting to write an adventure based on that story. The fun part would be modifying it enough so that the players wouldn't automatically know what the story was based on and seeing how long it took them to figure out they were playing out the WoO (probably not long). For example, have a Daern's Instant Fortress the pc's happen to be in plane shift somehow and drop on a witch & her henchmen that are menacing a halfling village. Searching her body, they find magical slippers or boots (not ruby) among other items, and are soon visited by a sorceress that explains they are in a demi-plane and can only be sent home by the great and powerful ruling wizard. There's a trail that leads to the wizard's city with hazards along the way ( a Scarecrow, Iron Golem, Dire Lion, & treants). They are harrassed by the witch's sister along the way. They must go through the poisoned poppy field to get to the city. They have to convince the city guard to let them enter the city. Once in the city they have to convice the wizard's guard to gain an audience, convince the wizard to help them and once they do go on the wizard's quest to get the witch's broomstick. To get to the witch's tower the must pass through the haunted forest and are attacked by undead and flying monkeys that attempt to capture the one wearing the magical boots. Once at the tower, they must bypass the witch's troops, break or sneak into the tower, find the witch, kill her (or convince her to part with her broomstick) and return to the wizard. But he betrays them and they have to battle him. Once they do this they are re-visited by the sorceress who tells them the power of the boots and sends them on their merry way and she rules the kingdom herself (her plan from the start).

How about a paladin in full plate, a were lion, and scarecrow golem? Dorothy could be a sorcerer and Toto her familiar.
It's like an adventure that came out in TSR Jam a few years back, it was this whole Jabberwocky thing. There was the jubjub bird, and the fumious bandersnatch. And yes, you had to get the magic sword and cut it's head off snicker snak. Heh. |

The way I would do it is change the gender roles. Instead of witches have a bunch of good wizards and bad wizards running around. Have the wizard be a witch. Have the heroes kill the wizard with the boots out of complete happenstance. Obviously a forest with fiendish ents is needed, A scarecrow that casts feeblemind on one of the characters. (have to have a character without a brain) a wear lion attacks them and the bite only causes the one biten to loose his will save bonus.(preferably he bites a spellcaster) An iron Golem with the ability to drop the charisma score of one character. They have to go to the witch to get their abilities back. But the witch wants a wicked sorcerer destroyed and they have to do all that yadda yadda. If igure the players should figure it out about flying monkey time.

Could be interesting but I think it would be better to switch a few simple basic plot elements. Change the witch to a warlock, the slippers to a hat and such. It'll take 'em a little longer to catch on that way. George Lucas did it, and he's made billions!

Also, if you try the poppy-seeded field, your players will groan and refuse to enter...they all know they're gonna falla asleep and be saved by outside forces...no fun, no fair, etc. That one has to be changed...perhaps a magical rainstorm that has the negative effects with some other way to remove it (preferably one the PCs have at their disposal)

I once thought about doing this, but my version would have a large twist. Instead of accidentaly killing one of the evil witches, they would have killed one of the good witches. (50/50 chance, right?

I'd suggest checking out Dungeonland and the sequal (brainfreeze - can't remember the name), 1e modules which were available as part of the classic downloads series on the DnD site at wizards. Adaptions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the looking glass into DnD adventures, and while they seem silly at the outset, I heartily recommend using them
Course, I'd probably cite this kind of fantasy as the primary inspiration for at least half of my games, so take this advice with a grain of salt Arwink -Kick 'em in the shins til their noses bleed-

If you do run that adventure, all the halflings be 20th level Paladins and stuff like that, and they gotta have base stats of all 18's.
They are munchkins, after all. |

I was thinking it might be interesting to use a spelljamming ship instead of a house. That way the PCs KNOW it's their fault, because they landed on the witch.

I once played a twisted version of Oz for the Deadlands game, it took us some time to figure it out. The scarecrow was a malformed man guarding a gold mine. The woodcutter was a strange creature collecting hearts (as in real hearts from critters) and the cowardly lion was a werewolf. It was real fun...
BTW instead of the poppy field there was a large chasm we had to cross. Of course there was only one small bridge, which was destroyed by something big and dangerous. |
