Chaos Rising - Necromancer Games |
Lead | |
|
Once upon a time, Monte reviewed a product and Tarondor bought it. It was Chaos Rising by Necromancer Games [See Monte's Review Here]. Now, six years later, I'm thinking of
reworking this thing to fit into my Ptolus campaign. Anyone else taken a whack at fixing the problems in this imaginative but problematic adventure?
Particularly the weird ending?

Is this the one with Juiblex...excuse me, Jubilex?

Correctamundo.

It's been a while and I don't have a copy at this time but problematic how? I mean, aside from all the massively EL inappropriate demon encounters
(like the one with the hezrou using blasphemy to wipe out an entire room of NPCs).

I'm assuming you're replacing Jubilex with Azathoth....no wait...Abhoth is the Ptolus version. Right? The Crawling Chaos and whatnot.

Problematic because the writer makes a thorough muddle of the issue of time travel, and doesn't do much to address the usual paradox problems. Also, the
final encounter is not survivable if one does not play it precisely as the author envisions.
Also, no. I'm using Juiblex (NOT "Jubilex"). This is so because I've made a tie-in betwixt Praemal and my own game world of Theeurth. A player character from Theeurth (in a campaign that ended back in the mid-'90's) who was pursued by agents of Demogorgon is now in my Company of the Vallis Moon campaign. He's been chased into Ptolus by those agents because he -is- one of the keys to Juby's prison. And for years, the player went by the screen name "Juiblex".

It's been too long to remember all the twists and turns of this module. However...does it really need to be time travel? What if, rather than
traveling back in time, the PCs are simply experiencing a pseudo-dream state and actually remembering deeds performed by their ancestors? Or something along
those lines.

It needs time travel. That, along with the interesting NPCs, is what makes the adventure interesting.

I'm afraid I'm not being very helpful due to my inability to remember key parts of the module. Sorry.

I picked up a used copy of this at my local Hastings at an additional 40% off. Five bucks. Not bad for something I will probably only cherry pick from. I see
you haven't posted here in a while. I'll take a gander at your campaign journal to see how things are going. In honor of the first time we exchanged
posts I've made this one really long paragraph.

"Azathoth....no wait...Abhoth is the Ptolus version. Right? The Crawling Chaos and whatnot. "
Actually, Abhoth is a minor Cthulhu Mythos being in his own right. He's not a stand-in for Azathoth. Azathoth has no Ptolus equivalent. (To get really Mythos-pedantic, the Galchutt are mostly like the Great Old Ones, and Azathoth is an Outer God.) I think Abhoth is the only actual Mythos entity that I used as a Galchutt, but I could be forgetting something. And Nyarlathotep is the Crawling Chaos. |

My bad. Didn't have my books handy. Plus I read too much and mix names up all the time anyway.
