Posts: 870 (05/14/09 05:59:01) Spooky Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Again I can relate to Monte's experiences, as I read many of King's early books in my late high school and early college days, but didn't keep up with his later works. It just seemed like there were so many of them that I lost track. In a funny coincidence, last night I watched the Family Guy homage to King's stories where they reenact Stand By Me, Misery, and Shawshank Redemption. King even has a cameo in the show, as a person walking across a snow-covered, back-woods road who is struck by a car (Misery setup). Just as he is struck he quips "hey, this would make a great story" then whips out a notepad and writes while he flies through the air. A second later he is plummeting back towards the snow and just before he hits it declares "done."

Zen and the Art of Writing, maybe, but I can get by on just those first two. Though I used to be one of his #1 fans, I've lost interest in Stephen King over the years. Lisey's Story took too long to go anywhere, and his other books starting with Gerald's Game were a drag to me. On writing was the last book of his I liked. He's a great writer, though, no doubt about it--even by his definition of 'great' in the book. Very few authors have NYT Bestselling fiction hit after hit and numerous articles in the New Yorker. The fact he can succeed in pop culture and high culture shows me how good he is. Edit: I bought On Writing the day it came out so I was able to do the exercise he suggests in the book and I sent it in. Didn't go anywhere, but what are you gonna do? It was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and it got me interested in his work. I've read several of his books after that. I can strongly recommend the Dark Tower series (try them on CD - they entertained me on my drive to work for the better part of six months!) and "Duma Key", which was quite good, even if Stevie decided to insult my politics and viewing habits more than once.

If you like fantasy, I also recommend The Eyes of the Dragon. I will second the recommendation on the Dark Tower books and On Writing. Lands of the Jade Oath. Coming soon from Rite Publishing. Beware the Bakemono.

I had to look at the cover again just to make sure I'd just read a Stephen King book. Then I had to check to make sure it was THE Stephen King. For some reason at the time I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea he'd written a fantasy novel--and an amazing one at that. Also, it's stuck with me. I think about it anytime I handle a cloth napkin. TMI, I know, but that book had a weird effect on me. Don't hate the playa, hate the GaMe!

That story and Flagg are so cool. He is such a cool bad guy I find myself rooting for him sometimes. That book is honestly one of the best jobs by a writer, in any book I have read, at setting mood/atmosphere and taking the reader into the tale like he is watching it unfold. And he pulls off the race against the clock at the end magnificently, tough to do on paper. That and IT are my absolute favorite books of his. I, too, read a bunch of his books in high school then got away from him. However, every few years in the summer, I reread IT or Eyes of the Dragon. I have probably read each 3 times now. It's been a couple years since Eyes of the Dragon last, so next year or year after I'll likely read IT again. So far I have been good at waiting long enough between readings that i still get plenty of "Oh yeah, I forgot about that" moments. Especially with IT since it's so huge. Never got to the Dark Tower stuff, wish I would have since I heard Flagg was in at least one, but at this point likely won't. Skill challenges, Stunts, Combat Challenges, Feat Mastery, Skill Groups, Tokens...Yeah, this is awsome!!

This is key. There's nothing worse than an unfinished book series. 2) The late great Frank Muller read for a number of the audio books. I know this would then not constitute 'reading' the books, but Frank Muller is a master and I gotta listen to something at the gym and I've caught up to the New Yorker short stories podcast. Don't hate the playa, hate the GaMe!
