The beginning with George Kirk and the Vulcan part. I liked Simon Pegg's and Zachary Quinto's portrayal of Scotty and Spock. I thought they did good at creating characters that were very reminiscent of the original, but didn't try to imitate them. Karl Urban, on the other hand, could stand to be a little less wooden. His delivery of the "I'm a doctor, not a physicist" came off as awkward to me, like he was doing an impression of DeForest Kelley, not playing a role. However, I'm glad Chris Pine did very little in trying to be anything at all like Shatner/Kirk. Don't hate the playa, hate the GaMe!

Posts: 42 (05/24/09 18:55:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've seen it twice and as an old, old Trekkie who grew up with the show, I sat there the first time prepared to hate it and the opening just took my breath away and I was hooked from there. As a long time comic book fan, I understand and appreciate the idea of the reboot and I think this is just what Star Trek needed and with the alternate reality, it can breath deep and explore "strange new worlds" without the constraints of my beloved original. And I thought Karl Urban did a wonderful job - almost channeling DeForest Kelley. My only beef is that the science was more strained than usual and the specter of Spock Prime watching Vulcan die from another planet, not to mention that mobile supernova did make me wince. Star Trek has a better history than most in trying to be plausible (or at least make its science gobblegook sound plausible), and I thought they could have done a better job at that. I am encouraged though - a new generation of Trekkies are coming aboard and I suspect we will be seeing Star Trek movies (and prayerfully TV) for another four decades!

Our closest supernova-possible neighbor is Barnard's Star, about 8 light years away. If it went off, Earth would be completely sterilized and likely have its atmosphere stripped off by the hard gamma radiation, and possibly the entire surface of the planet would go molten, but it wouldn't disintegrate us. That's just silly. I mean, was it really necessary to say that Romulus was asploded? Saying "and then all life died over the course of a few minutes in agony, only spread out over a few hours as the planet rotated new land into the withering death energies" should certainly be good enough for anyone! Imagine the culture we would live in now if, instead of a dead corpse on an instrument of torture, our signifier was a child staring in wonder at the stars.

Old Spock's "And then the unthinkable happened" seems silly. He should have known exactly how much time he had.

Imagine the culture we would live in now if, instead of a dead corpse on an instrument of torture, our signifier was a child staring in wonder at the stars.

I just watched Star Trek II over the weekend. I'd forgotten about the apple in the Genesis cave. In the interview I saw, Abrams said he was more of a Star Wars fan, since that's what he grew up on. Not that he's not a Star Trek fan, just he preferred the one over the other. However, the two writers who collaborated on the screenplay have said they are big Star Trek fans. From what rumors I've heard, it sounds like a lot was cut from the movie. I've heard there's a scene of Nero on Rura Penthe, and the trailers even have a scene of older spock talking to his mom--or at least a woman who I think is his mom--on Vulcan. It could be, like Christian Slater in Star Trek VI, that Winona Ryder is just a big Star Trek fan and said she'd be willing to do any role so long as she could be in a Star Trek movie. However, Slater was distracting. I didn't even recognize Ryder. It was only when the credits rolled I found out. Don't hate the playa, hate the GaMe! The Kansas/Iowa parallels have a lot to do with vast tracts of plains-turned-farmland maybe? Though I did see them. I loved the visuals of the little bar out there with the enormous 22nd century buildings in the background. I didn't recognize Winona Ryder either, for what it's worth. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I pegged Spock's mom as Wynona Ryder, but was hesitant to say anything to my wife (sitting next to me) because I had tried earlier to claim that Kirk's mom was Kirsten Dunst. She's actually one of the original doctors on House, Cameron I think. My hadn't seen any of the promo stuff about Eric Bana being Nero, so she was surprised by that as well. On a bit of a tangent: Leonard Nimoy is playing an important role on "Fringe". Breathing... Its important! This Public Service Announcement is brought to you by the letter Q.
