Okay, I haven't had a chance to look it over yet but ... Monks use the Psionic power source?

I thought that's what they were always supposed to use. Ki is closest to psionic powers.
Imagine the culture we would live in now if, instead of a dead corpse on an instrument of torture, our signifier was a child staring in wonder at the
stars.

Erm yes? There is another article available on the editorial calendar that briefly discusses the issue ki vs. psionic power source.
So far me thinks the new monks rule :-) Movement techniques are awesome and I especially like the Drunken Monkey encounter power.

Yes, the monk is psionic. A short summary of the reasons given in design and development:
The nature of the "ki" power source was looking indistinguishable from the "striker" role and that's far too limited for a power source. "Ki" was unavoidably themed as "the asian power source" and they didn't want that. Samurai and ninja and the like are far more effectively handled using the approach given for gladiators in Dragon: They're something you layer on an existing class rather than a class in their own right. "Ki" and "psionics" both had a very similar theme in the first place. -- (I'd also note that the psionic monk has precedent in other games, including older D&D-based CRPGs such as the Wizardry series. I'd been wondering since the outset why they didn't just go with psionic for the monk, especially since 'ki' as a power source was largely a 3E kludge to explain why the martial mystic was doing supernatural things - but in 4E even the plain martial power source guy can do that.) |

Seems only natural to me... I always wondered about the usefullness of the ki source.

After I read the design notes I agree with their assessments. Now I am curious what the 2nd power source will be in the PH3.

Is it set in stone that PH3 will have another new power source?

I haven't heard whether it will or not, but Shadow hasn't been done yet. Necromancers and illusionists...that's a fairly notable gap. I don't
think they want to leave that vacancy for yet *another* year.

Okay, so I've finished reading through most of the playtest article (stopped around level 16 or so), and read the R&D article that accompanied it.
So yes, the psionic power source does fit well -- calling them disciplines, which also fits in nice with the concept of the monk. Part of me wants to make my bard take a couple of the monk powers for his paragon multiclassing. Mostly 'cause the alternate move actions as part of the full discipline powers are cool, and together with the attack power are pretty flavorful. Part of me wonders if the "Strike the Avalanche" power was called "Bowling for Bad Guys" in original playtests ^_^

The article also gives us a new Feat: Focused Expertise. It's basically Weapon Focus and Implement Focus combined, so if you're a sword mage, you can
focus on a weapon for both weapon and implement attacks instead of having to take 2 feats.
