I know I can't just throw away an old computer. But what about a broken printer? What about a broken DVD player?

I'm not sure, but I'd try calling your local recycling center, and see what they suggest. It may vary from region to region.

I am not sure if there is one near you but Best Buy has a recycling program. You need to pull the HD yourself, but this is recommended anyway.

He may have had a change of heart, but Monte's ranted about Best Buy before. Here's another option:

Both my printer and my DVD player have Flash card readers in them. I never use them, but if I did it would certainly be easy to forget about and accidentally
"gift" a bunch of pictures to some strangers.

To answer the original question, yes. All electronics have a number of heavy elements used in their manufacture and should not be disposed of in the
"generic" trash.

My city let's us drop off our hazardous waste (including electronics) twice a month for free. Yours may have a similar program.

My city is apparently behind the times in terms of garbage disposal, but they take computers et. al. in the general trash without issue.
