Anyone know any books that actually describe or films that actually show one well enough that you can imagine them, somehow, merry?

This could just as easily be posted in the 4e forum, but, has anyone else ever thought to themselves, 'elves are always described as being merry in the
books and many fantasy books, but are rarely actually depicted that way?' Most of the time in films (LotR included) they come across as stoic, almost
Spocklike.

I don't the written text of LotR depicts elves are particularly merry. Even in The Hobbit, they seem stoic, reserved, and sometimes xenophobic.

They're merry in Discworld. They're also homicidal and insane, though.

They're merry at the north pole! Of course, those are properly gnomes. Maybe they once were elves, but the popular view of them being short with ruddy
cheeks and very industrious more properly fit the gnomish profile. Especially when you consider all of the glamour that they seem to be able to use. Just
imagine what it would have been like if Santa had tried to use traditional fantasy elves.
Santa- "How are the toys coming this year?" Head Elf- " Not well, my lord. The lords council took longer than expected to decide on the new toy lines. The younger members of the council wished to gift the human children with the knowledge of the ages. The older, conservative members claimed that mankind is not ready for such gifts. One suggestion was to give them the skill of gem making, but the house of Finnvara threatened to take their clans and kin and leave the north pole if such was done. They are still debating." Santa- "What!! It's alreay thanksgiving and we haven't even got the lines put together yet?!" Head Elf- "I am sorry my lord, but the council cannot be rushed." Santa- "What do you mean rushed! They've been debating since January!!" Head elf- "These things take time my lord. Besides, what is a year to decide a matter of this import to us? Are we not immortal?" Santa (as he kicks the elves out of the north pole)- "I'm gonna get me some Gnomes! Those damned elves almost ruined christmas and made me look bad. Besides, that Travelocity fellow might be able to speed up my sleigh!" |

Keebler Elves - watch the commercials. They are happy even if they almost drown in chocolate.

But didn't the dwarves and Bilbo sort of run into them by seeing their party (merrymaking) through the woods? Then they'd get close and the lights would go out, only to reappear elsewhere. And yet they were kind of humorless when met in person as you say, which is my point.

Racists who aren't above a little below belt action with humans, unlike dwarves.
