Defensive character type?

For an NPC I want to make a character who's a mostly defensive character who can also defend others. I was thinking of going with a short homemade PRC that allows him to share shield bonuses with adjacent allies who have no shield.

Anyone have other good ideas of a character of this type? How would you build a NPC who was supposed to fill a mostly defensive role for a small party?

I statted these up years ago, when Arcana Evolved was still fresh, in response to complaints that designing spellcasters in AU was too hard. I was going to write 20 NPCs (1 of each level, and 4 of each spellcasting class) and submit them to DT.com.
