Fire Temple Questions

My players are about to tackle the fire temple, and there are a couple of things that I have noted that I'm unclear on, or at least unsure how to handle.

Anyone have any pointers for the following items?:
- The fire mephits (areas 108, 109 among others) are described as hovering near torches to facilitate fast healing, but their maneuverability rating doesn't allow for hovering. Has anyone come up with an alternative for them? (or... does everyone just shrug off the...

Who's afraid of the South Gate?

I've been reviewing the forces of the two gates to the CRM and I'm trying to figure out why the general consensus is that parties who go through the south gate will meet an untimely demise more so than the main gate. I'm going to do a quick breakdown of the two forces to start with.

Main gate: mooks: 16 gnolls, 18 human War1, 12 medium-sized zombies.
Big guns: Wormspike (CR3), Mereclar, (Rng5), Howler, (CR5 or 7), Terrenygit (Clr5, CR6)

My players should soon be encountering Lareth the Beautiful in Nulb. In addition to scouring the BotB for quotes for him, I came up with a few others to try to make Lareth as memorable as possible. I'm taking the advice of some of the Best of the Boards comments and posting my campaign log here. Thank you in advance for any comments or advice that you may have for me. Way, way back, when Hommlet was the place to be, my party cleric used to give Elmo a cake whenever he went to visit him. It was a random thing, they had a cake one day after visiting a baker (dunno why?), met Elmo and gave it to him. Every susequent time they met him the Cleric gave him a cake.

Fast forward many levels and the party find 'Elmo' in the recovered temple. "So what was it again that I always used to bring you, Elmo?", Rakshasha Elmo tries to detect...

From my playing of this module there seems to be consistant errors in the scale of the maps, for example in the recovered temple room 2 there are 5 ogres squished into a 20ftx20ft space. Has there been any correction to the map scales, I can't see them in the errata file here.

While making my own 3.5e conversion of the original ToEE module, I stumbled across a discrepancy that I am unable to explain.

In the original T1-4 Rufus has the following stats: S 15 I 10 W 10 D 12 Co 12 Ch 14
In RttToEE he has the following stats: Str 16, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 15, Wis 10, Cha 14

The Str and Dex changes reflect his attribute points at 4th and 8th level, but where did the...

My players just had a go at the deck of many things, oh dear.... One player ended up being attacked by dread wraiths which they managed to survive despite summoning two more, got a attribute bonus, then got soul trapped (I've ruled she's been sent straight into the clutches of Imix to play with). The next only drew a single card and got a stack of XP. The third drew a castle.

I recall seeing a few years back a listing of the approximate appropriate character levels for the different sections of the RttToEE. For instance, if I recall correctly, Hommlet and moathouse was 4th. Nulb and temple ruins was 5th. The party should average 6th by the time they enter the CRM complex and so on.

I have looked for that posting and can't find it. It migiht have fallen off the tail or been lost in that hack a year or two ago. But I was...

I remember a scripted tense conversation for PC's to overhear between Elmo and Y'Dey. This is supposed to be a source of hints about relationships in town as well as some suspicions. It was a really well written little exchange between the two. I think it was set in the Inn of the Welcome Wench.
